WASTED WHEELERS

The NYPD’s increased efforts against drunk driving paid off this year. Cops arrested 10,000 people citywide for drunk driving, and police credit these arrests with a decrease in the number of drunk driving accidents and related deaths for 2006, compared to 2005. These 10,000 barhopping morons deserve no sympathy for choosing to drive drunk. Next time, they should try being pedestrians like the rest of us and either walk home, splurge on a cab, take the subway or sleep it off on the train platform—or in 2013, snooze in the new tunnel linking the Long Island Railroad to the Grand Central Terminal. The East Side Access project received $2.63 billion in funding from the federal government last Monday and is expected to cost $6.3 billion in total. A new tunnel will probably mean fewer rats and less of a chance that the place you land was urinated on by fellow drunken partiers: sweet dreams.
